How Productivity Affects You
Productivity affects everyone and we should all be concerned
about our productivity, why? Because the rate of inflation can be alarming. For
example, The price of rice has gone up in Nigeria from $20 to $ 75 in the last
few years. This is about a 275% increase in five years. Therefore if your
income or output is not equally going up at a comparative rate it means that
you will have less rice to eat. This is how inflation affects your standard of
living. However, you can take interest in increasing your Productivity as a
hedge against inflation.
Productivity is important because it contributes to growth in
output, income and living standards. Productivity should be important to you
because it helps you to meet your (perhaps growing) obligations on food, school
fees, shelter and clothing, and still maintain a higher standard of living or
even improve your quality of life. However, many pay little attention to
improving their productivity. Ignoring personal productivity enhancement methods
can only lead to misery or poverty.
For instance assuming your income as a family head is about $30
or let's say $40 per month and a bag of rice has increased to $75, and your
income is still $40 that means you will not be able to afford a bag of rice to
eat. So that is how productivity affects everyone.
Relationship Between Growth And Productivity
According to Webster Dictionary to be Productive means "
having the quality or power of producing especially in abundance"
There is a relationship
between growth and productivity, for example, you can say my company is looking
for ways to improve, increase or enhance workers' productivity or say there has
been an increase or improvement in productivity, in all aspects of our
operations. Therefore productivity means growth, abundance and increase.
Productivity Starts with You
Productivity sometimes sounds or seems like a very technical
term. This most likely leaves the impression on people that it cannot be
achieved. This is not true. Growth is achievable through simple things that we
embark on in our everyday life. We can achieve productivity through simple
things. This means that productivity starts with you. It starts with small or
little things you do daily. It starts at what time you wake up. Activities you
do as a priority. It is a choice. They affect your growth.
If want to be productive you must focus on productive activities
daily rather than being busy. There is a great difference between being busy
and being productive. This means that one can be busy without producing
anything. You can also be busy all day long without generating income or
creating value. This makes a whole lot of difference.
You can be deliberate in becoming more productive. Productivity
is simply about the effective and efficient use of all your resources. You may
have all or part of these resources which include time, all of us have 24
hours. There are other resources you may have, it includes skills, people you
know, knowledge, information that you have, finance, equipment, space, energy
and materials. The more efficient and effective you are with your resources,
the greater your achievements will be.
Therefore, how you become more productive is an important
question. A simple answer is that if you can use your skills efficiently to
solve people's problems and create value for others you can generate income.
Money flows to people who create great value and solve problems.
Remember, all of us have the same 24 hours, the richest man in the world has 24
hours, and you also have 24 hours so how you use these scarce resources
matters.
Your output divided by input gives you a productivity ratio, but
if your output is greater than your input then you are said to be productive.
Productivity Improvement Techniques.
The easy way to survive in a depressed and inflationary economy
lies in increasing your productivity to achieve the highest possible output per
person, per hour at the highest possible quality, utilising the raw materials
and technology available to you.
There are hundreds of techniques, methods and systems for
improving productivity. Here let's consider four techniques for improving your
productivity
1. Increase output while input remains the same, this means that
assuming you can write a memo of 10 pages for one hour, you can increase the
output in one hour and write 12 pages, you have increased your output with the
same input of one hour
2. You can also decrease input while output remains the same.
for example, instead of writing 10 pages for an hour, you can write 10 pages in
40mins. This means that you have decreased your input while your output remains
the same.
You can also increase
input resulting in a very large increase in output. In this scenario, you can
use two hours to write 30 pages instead of 20 pages. This means you have
increased your output to a very large proportion compared to the rate of
increase in input.
4. You can also decrease input by a very large amount with a
resultant small reduction in output. This means instead of using one hour to
write 10 pages, you now use 30 minutes to write 8 pages rather than 5 pages.
Therefore you can use any of the above four techniques to
increase your output today. It is all about seeking to be more efficient in
resource utilization.
Imagine if you can master productivity, you can increase your
output and income by 50% -100% per year, anytime and anywhere…
